Certas Energy supports National Lorry Week

To celebrate National Lorry Week, taking place between 11-16th September, Certas Energy paid a special visit to Seahorse Nursery and Albemarle Primary School in Wandsworth, London yesterday to teach children about the haulage industry.

With over 90% of goods consumed in the UK delivered by truck, the haulage industry is the life-blood of the UK. However, with an ageing workforce, there is concern over a future skills shortage. This is the third annual National Lorry Week organised by the Road Haulage Association, aimed at promoting the haulage industry to schools, communities and colleges to attract a future workforce and get the UK to #LoveTheLorry!

In support of National Lorry Week, we took our Fuel Rigid Delivery Lorry to Seahorse Nursery and Albemarle Primary School in Wandsworth, London. The children were given the chance to sit in the cab and learn how to use the pumps, hoses and various protective equipment. They also had the chance to ask the driver Craig Lyell what it’s like to work as a truck driver.

Alex Ward, Regional Manager at Certas Energy commented, “The haulage industry, and the drivers that keep it moving, is so important to the UK economy but there’s a lack of appreciation of the important work that the industry does. We are delighted to have been able to visit these children today and it’s great to see their reaction to the truck. Who knows, maybe we will have inspired some future truck drivers today!”

Why we #LoveTheLorry

Earlier this year, one of Certas’ own drivers, Darren Gilham from our Ashford depot won the FPS Driver of the Year Award for his heroic actions. Darren explained why he loves working in the haulage industry:

“My job allows me to work as an individual as well as a team which means I have the relative freedom to complete my daily duties and responsibilities but with the backup and support of the management and operational team. This is really important to me and makes my job a satisfying challenge particularly when we celebrate our achievements together as a team.”

Darren’s line manager, Darron Lilley, Operations Manager at Certas Energy also commented:

“I’ve worked in the transport industry for most of my career and cannot recommend it highly enough. Haulage is a demanding sector but the rewards far outweigh the pressures. No two days are the same and managing a fleet of drivers means I am constantly having to think on my feet to resolve any issues to ensure deliveries are made on time. It’s the perfect job for anyone who loves a challenge and working with a team to get the job done.”
