Google’s Nest Labs, Inc. subsidiary has unveiled changes across the company’s entire product range, introducing Nest Cam, the second generation Nest Protect, new features for the Nest Learning Thermostat, and a brand new app.

The second generation Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm is the first residential alarm to offer a custom, split-spectrum sensor that uses two wavelengths of light to look for different types of fires. Also, Nest Protect alarms can now be silenced using the Nest app.

The new Nest Protect is now 11% smaller than the original first generation product, allowing it to sit flusher against a ceiling or wall. A new evacuation light shines brighter than the original too, whilst a new, redesigned backplate makes the product easier to install. Added functionality also now allows the device to be tested directly from the user’s smartphone, whilst the device will test its speaker and horn quietly and quickly using the built-in microphone. It is also now supplied with a conditional 10-year warranty as standard.

The best-selling Nest Learning Thermostat has had a makeover too. It will now notify customers when temperatures drop to help avoid frozen pipes and is adding new integrations with other Nest products.

Safety Temperature Alerts send a message to the user’s phone if their home gets too hot or too cold and the thermostat will also alert the user when the temperature returns to normal. Nest’s thermostat also now pairs with the Nest Protect, with smoke and CO alerts displayed on the thermostat. The devices also play well together so in the event of a CO leak or fire, the heating system is automatically deactivated.

At the heart of it all of course is the Nest app. For the first time, Version 5.0 brings together all three Nest products, across multiple platforms, to make it easier to access and control Nest products.

“At Nest, we always wanted to build more than a thermostat,” said Tony Fadell, Nest Chief Executive Officer. “Our vision was to create a thoughtful home – a home that takes care of itself and the people in it. Five years later, all the pieces are in place.

“We’ve built a portfolio of best-in-class products that each stand on their own while doing more together. More than 9,000 developer partners are using the Works with Nest developer program to help seamlessly integrate everything from washers and dryers to cars with our thermostat, smoke alarm and camera. And we’re working with energy and insurance partners to bring more value to our shared customers.

“Nest products are used in 190+ countries, across multiple platforms, and available wherever people shop. The result? Energy saved, lives spared, and countless memories recorded and shared.”
