Claire Perry, new Minister at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS)
Claire Perry has been announced as the new Minister at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) following a post election cabinet reshuffle.
Perry is taking over the role of climate change minister from Nick Hurd, who was appointed Minister for Policing and the fire Service.
Perry’s appointment will be largely welcomed by renewable energy campaigners after positive comments from her on the importance of the Paris agreement and the necessity of investing in clean energy.
She previously stated that she hoped the government’s plan for meeting the fifth carbon budget would feature “an ambitious set of targets, that are balanced with keeping costs affordable for consumers”.
In addition, she last year welcomed government proposals to set a new long term target to build a zero carbon economy.
She is also largely supportive of shale gas, having stated, “the UK has one of the best track records in the world when it comes to protecting our environment while also developing our industries, and Ministers have assured me that this experience will be brought to bear on the shale gas protections”.
